I have also been thinking about using a cell phone case as a mount. If one was to replace the focuser, does anyone know what the specs of the new unit would be? What I mean is if I wanted to purchase a replacement focuser what would I be looking for in terms of compatibility? I have noticed that the focuser is sticky although have not tried using it for viewing yet. I have the scope fresh out of the box and I'm looking forward to trying it out but as you may have heard, we've got a little smoke problem in Oregon right now.

I found myself constantly wishing for the two-speed focuser I have on my birding spotting scope, but I am not going to invest in a better focuser - I would try the reflector before going that route.Įdited by lomontman, 12 September 2020 - 12:14 PM. The bigger problem was trying to tweak the focus - that would unsettle the telescope - I'd wait a moment or two for it to settle - then decide no that's still not a very good focus, repeat, repeat now the object is moving out of the field and I need to use the slow-motion controls, then try to focus again. Especially since with the Starsense App, objects are found quickly with little extraneous movement and then it's just a matter of tweaking the location with the slow-motion controls to bring the object into the center of the view, and then tracking the object. But I will say settling time did not impact my use of the scope with the supplied diagonal. I couldn't give you an exact number and I have disassembled the scope in order to return it. How is the settling time with 1.25" eyepieces?

I was pleased you felt the mount did a reasonable job with the lighter weight diagonal. I guess this is just a characteristic of a low cost package. I have seen this in other low cost packages where the focuser works well up to about 150X and then it becomes a bit tricky to get that exact focus needed. Perhaps getting the reflector or waiting for the C6 version of Explorer (that telescope is an option in the StarSense app, so I presume it will eventually be a product offering from Celestron ).Ĭompared to the StarBlast I would expect CA in the refractor, as you noted. I will probably be returning the DX 102AZ. I'd have to agree with that recommendation. Others on this topic have recommended the 130mm reflector version of the Explorer. The mount can absolutely handle the 2" diagonal, though it does take considerably longer to settle down after moving the scope than with the supplied diagonal.Ĭhromatic aberration was also a problem - that is to be expected with a refractor but I found the combined CA and poor focusing to be disqualifying. That seemed to improve the views but I was still having trouble with fine focus.

I considered the fact that the diagonal was the problem because it is a plastic diagonal that did not impress me as a quality optical object. Most of the time I never felt like I was achieving accurate focus - it was very hard to get stars to be pinpoints of light. However, the views on the telescope were inferior to those with the Starblast. I was viewing with a friend who has an Orion Starblast 4.5" reflector. Take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt because I'm a newbie and don't have a lot of knowledge to compare my experience to. I tried out the DX 102AZ refractor last night on a perfectly clear night in New York. For the mount upgrade - sure! It's just an ordinary refractor with the standard dovetail.Įdited by halx, 10 September 2020 - 10:22 PM. So a 2" upgrade might be already on the very edge of its capacity. I would advise against additional counterweights on this as intro-level mounts are tested to work acceptably with the stock pieces weight only.

In both cases OTA drilling will be involved, so get familiar with the procedure first. So if it's too short for your 2" rig balance just move it on the OTA more or get a standard length Celestron bar (~$50). Can anyone confirm this? Is there any way folks can suggest to counter balance given the limitations of the mount? Is it easy to upgrade the mount for the DX 102AZ? Thank you in advance!į.W.I.C.W., it's coming with their "ultra-shortie" dovetail bar (they seem to be saving on everything lately). Hello there! I have a DX 102AZ on order and I recall reading in another board (which I can't seem to find now) that 2" eyepieces would overwhelm the mount and put the scope off balance.
